How to Create Neon Glow Effects in Photoshop

Neon glow effects are one of those design techniques that never go out of style. They show up in everything from retro-themed posters to modern web headers. Photoshop makes it straightforward to create realistic neon effects once you understand the layering technique.

Setting Up Your Canvas

Create a new document at 1920 by 1080 pixels. Fill the background with a very dark color. Pure black works, but a dark charcoal like #1a1a2e gives a slightly more realistic feel.

For added realism, use a photo of a dark brick wall or concrete surface as your background.

Creating the Text

Choose a thin, single-stroke font because real neon tubes are a consistent width. Script fonts also work well. Good choices: Beon, Yellowtail, Pacifico, or any thin monoline font. Set the text color to white. Size it to fill most of your canvas.

The Core Neon Effect (Layer Styles)

Double-click the text layer to open Layer Styles.

Outer Glow

Blend mode: Screen.

Choose your neon color (blue: #4d9fff, pink: #ff6eb4, green: #39ff14). Opacity about 70 percent. Size between 20 and 40 pixels. This creates the wide, soft glow that neon casts on surrounding surfaces.

Inner Glow

Blend mode: Screen. Use a lighter version of your color or pure white. Opacity around 80 percent. Size 5 to 10 pixels. Source: Center. This brightens the core to simulate tube intensity.

Drop Shadow (used as secondary glow)

This is a trick.

Set blend mode to Screen (not Multiply). Color: your neon color. Distance 0, Spread 0, Size 60 to 80 pixels. Opacity around 50 percent. This creates a second, larger glow layer behind the text.

Color Overlay

Set to your neon color at about 80 percent opacity with blend mode Normal. This tints the text to match the glow.

Adding Realism

Wall Glow

Create a new layer beneath your text.

Select a large, soft brush set to your neon color at 15 to 20 percent opacity. Paint a soft glow behind the text. This simulates light hitting the wall.

Connecting Lines

Real neon signs have thin tubes connecting letters, covered with dark coating. Using the Pen tool, draw thin paths between letters. Stroke with a 1 or 2 pixel brush in a dark version of your color. Lower opacity to 30 percent. This subtle detail sells the realism.

Mounting Points

Draw small rectangular shapes at points along the text using medium gray. Add Drop Shadow and slight Bevel and Emboss. These tiny details make the viewer's brain accept the effect.

Applying to Shapes and Illustrations

The exact same layer style settings work on any shape layer or vector path. For complex illustrations with multiple elements, put each on its own layer so you can color sections differently.

Saving Your Style

Save your neon effect as a Layer Style preset. In the dialog, click New Style. Now you can apply the same effect to any layer with one click. Build a small library of neon presets in different colors for quick access on future projects.
