Background removal is one of the most common Photoshop tasks. Multiple methods suit different complexity levels.
Remove Background Button
One-click AI-powered removal in the Properties panel. Works remarkably well for portraits and products on simple backgrounds. Refine the mask afterward for edges.
Select Subject
Creates a selection around the detected subject. More control than the one-click button. Best when subject is clearly separated from background.
Quick Selection Tool
Press W, paint over the subject. Photoshop expands the selection following edges. Hold Shift to add, Alt to subtract. Good starting point for moderate complexity.
Pen Tool
Manual paths around the subject. Most time-consuming but cleanest edges. Press P, click anchor points, click-drag for curves. Professional retouchers use this for flawless results.
Select and Mask Workspace
After any rough selection, click Select and Mask. The Refine Edge Brush handles fine detail like hair. Adjust Smooth, Feather, Contrast, and Shift Edge sliders. Use Decontaminate Colors for fringing.
Channels-Based Selection
Find the channel with highest contrast between subject and background. Duplicate it, push contrast with Levels, load as selection. Works well for hair and trees.
Choosing the Right Method
Simple backgrounds: one-click removal. Medium complexity: Quick Selection plus Select and Mask. Maximum precision: Pen Tool for hard edges, Channels for organic detail.
